What Is the CleanBC Home Upgrade Program?
The CleanBC Home Upgrade program is a BC government initiative that pays homeowners real money — a direct rebate cheque — for upgrading from fossil fuel heating to clean electric heat pumps. The program is funded by the provincial government as part of BC's climate commitments, and the money is available right now.
This is not a tax credit. It is not a discount on your bill. It is a physical cheque that arrives at your home weeks after installation. Most Greater Vancouver homeowners who call us are surprised by how much they actually qualify for.
This includes the federal greener homes grant layer where applicable. Call us for current exact amounts — the program is updated periodically.
How Much Can You Get?
| Upgrade Type | Rebate Range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Air-source heat pump — ducted (furnace replacement) | $6,000–$16,000 | Highest rebate tier; requires licensed contractor installation |
| Air-source heat pump — ductless mini split (3+ zones) | $3,000–$8,000 | Must be primary heat source to qualify for higher amounts |
| Air-source heat pump — ductless mini split (1–2 zones) | $1,000–$3,000 | Supplemental heating rebates |
| Heat pump water heater | Up to $1,000 | Add-on rebate; can be combined with space heat rebate |
| Air sealing and insulation (combined with heat pump) | Up to $2,500 | Additional rebates when done as part of a full home upgrade |
Who Qualifies?
Most Greater Vancouver homeowners qualify. The main eligibility requirements are:
- You own and occupy the home as your primary residence
- The installation is done by a CleanBC-approved contractor (we are approved)
- The heat pump meets minimum efficiency requirements (all systems we install qualify)
- A pre-installation home energy assessment may be required for higher rebate tiers
- The installation is fully permitted (we handle all permits)
Rental property owners may also qualify for separate rebates under BC's rental housing programs. Call us to discuss your specific situation.
What Is NOT Covered
- Heat pumps installed by non-approved contractors
- Unpermitted installations
- Systems that don't meet minimum HSPF2 efficiency ratings
- Vacation homes or properties not used as a primary residence (standard program)
How the Application Process Works — When You Use Us
Free Assessment
We visit and confirm your exact rebate amount before any work starts. You know the number before you commit.
We Install
We complete the installation, pull all permits, and get the inspection done. All required documentation is collected during this step.
We File
We submit your complete CleanBC rebate application. You sign where needed — we do all the paperwork and follow up.
Cheque Arrives
BC government processes your rebate. Most homeowners receive their cheque within 8–12 weeks of a complete application.
Can I Apply Myself?
Technically yes — homeowners can apply to CleanBC directly. In practice, the application requires specific documentation that your contractor collects during installation, and errors or missing documentation delay or reject claims. Every installation we do includes rebate application processing at no extra cost. There's no reason to go it alone.
Can I Combine Rebates?
Yes. The CleanBC provincial rebate can be combined with the Canada Greener Homes Grant (federal program) and in some cases with BC Hydro or FortisBC rebates. The total can exceed $16,000 in optimal situations. We identify every rebate you qualify for during your free assessment.
Does the Program Have an End Date?
CleanBC rebates have been available since 2021 and the program has been extended and expanded. However, rebate amounts and availability do change. Homeowners who call us today are locking in current rates. We cannot predict when the program will change or end — acting sooner gives you certainty.
